A laptop or a desktop?

One of the questions that could pop out from a person that would purchase a new rig. Considering that desktops can be the bang for the buck since hardware cost is cheaper than its laptop hardware counterpart. The advantage of laptop though is portability since it can be folded and brought anywhere considering that you wouldn’t mind the weight. However, when it comes to gaming a clear decision can be sees which is to get a desktop. Manufacturers though would always cater to a specific market who wants gaming and portability all in one and here it is from Asus, the W90Vp-X1.

Weighing at 11.5lbs, this laptop sure is a back breaker and one of the heaviest laptop around. Add in the power brick at around 2.5lbs, you are carrying a total of 14lbs which is quite a load! The laptop itself measures 2.5×17.4×12.9, which justifies the weight of the laptop. The screen estate is very much generous which is 18.4″ wide having a full HD 1920×1080 resolution which would make DVD videos look awesome. Speaking of DVD videos, yep you’ve seen that right, no Blu-Ray support. Though upgrades will surely be added in the future or the capabilities of this machine will be wasted on regular DVDs.

The laptop runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 at 2.8GHz which can be overclocked easily with the use of Turbo Gear utility. Turbo Gear can overclock the already fast 2.8GHz speed up to 3.2GHz or 17% increase!  6GBs of DDR2 memory is installed which would provide the laptop with speed that can handle the latest in gaming. Of course being a gaming laptop, a 1024mb ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 is powering the video needs of this laptop. Connectivity options are also very much plentiful with the 8-in-1 card reader, Bluetooth, LAN, WiFi, 4 USB ports, HDMI port, VGA port, and audio ports. The laptop includes a 12 cell battery which sounds like a huge number but actually isn’t. The fast processor along with other components draw huge power so the 12 cell battery could just be there to provide some untethered time when you some gaming action on the go. A 2 megapixel camera is included which is adequate for some video chatting.

Even with the lack of Blu-Ray support which most new laptops support which aren’t even much on gaming aspect, the W90Vp-X1 is still a good decision. Be careful though because the 14lbs carrying weight wouldn’t be very easy. For the price of 2,199, consider your other options if portability is really a factor. Other than those mentioned, this baby is good nonetheless.
